A. Curriculum Vitae
(pp. 1-20)

I) Education:
I graduated (1969) from the Lycée Léonin (French high school) in Athens, Greece. I was further educated in Switzerland: I passed the Swiss National Examination for the admission to Swiss Universities (Fribourg) in April 1970. I studied at the University of Neuchâtel where I majored in Chemical Engineering (Diplôme d’ Ingénieur Chimiste) in June 1975. In February 1976, I was enrolled as a PhD student at the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the University of Zurich under the supervision of Professors Hans Schmid (deceased in 1977) and Manfred Hesse. I was awarded the PhD in Organic Chemistry in November 1979. Concurrently with my doctoral studies, I joined the Graduate Program of Environmental Sciences at the University of Geneva (spring semester 1979). I was awarded the “Certificat” (equivalent to Master Degree) in Environmental Analytical Chemistry in May 1980.
Languages: My mother tongue is Greek. I am fluent (writing and speaking) in English, French & German.

II) Post-doctoral activities:
March 1980 - May 1981 and May 1985 to September 1985: Research Associate and Guest Researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute for Water Resources and Water Pollution Control (EAWAG) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich).
June 1981 – July 1982 and January 1984 – May 1985: “Maître Assistant” (equivalent to Lecturer) and “Chargé des Cours et de Recherche” at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Geneva.
July 1982 - January 1984: Senior Research Associate at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Stanford University (CA, USA) (leave of absence from the University of Geneva after invitation from Stanford University).

III) Professional Experience:
i) Academic track:
April 1984: Elected Assistant Professor of Environmental Chemistry at the new Department of Chemistry of the University of Crete. I joined the University of Crete in January 1986.
1986-1989: Assistant Professor of Environmental Chemistry.
1989-1993: Associate (Tenured) Professor of Environmental Chemistry.
1993-present: Professor of Environmental Chemistry.
1997-present: Founder and Director of Environmental Chemical Processes Laboratory (ECPL).
1998-present: Initiator and Director of Post-Graduate Programmes “Environmental Sciences and Engineering” and “Environmental Protection Technologies”.

B) Research & Bibliometrics:
I have authored and co-authored 105 articles (see below attached list of publications) in leading international scientific journals (e.g. Nature, Science, Environmental Science and Technology, Journal of Geophysical Research, Geophysical Research Letters, Journal of Chromatography A, Microbial Ecology, Environmental Health Perspectives, Cell Plant, Lancet etc.) that received 7600 citations (since 2010: 3705 citations), h-index 43, i10-index 78 (See: http://scholar.google.gr/citations?user=F1OsDfoAAAAJ&hl=en). I have also authored articles in refereed proceedings and 4 chapters in books (by invitation), and presented my research results in international conferences (see below attached list of publications).

B. Statement on Academic and Research Activities

“Scientometric” data, as those to be used below, are a measure to judge researchers individually. I strongly believe that institutional citizenship, teaching dedication and excellence, and innovative research (evaluated by fellow experts and not only on the base of numbers of papers and citations), are the most important criteria. However, “scientometrics” can additionally offer a picture of the performance for an institution (academic department, research group, research centre) or a researcher over a period of time.

I) Academic Accomplishments
Starting my academic career as a founding faculty member, and as its first elected Chairman, of the newly established Department of Chemistry of the University of Crete (UoC), I responded to the challenge to organize, with four other colleagues, from scrap a new Department at a developing University in Europe’s south end periphery, and at the same time produce high-quality research. The UoC had the reputation, between the Greek academics overseas, of an emerging research and teaching institution striving for quality.
Due to the dedication of the founding members (I can include myself) of UoC and of its Department of Chemistry some accomplishments can be mentioned:
The Chemistry Department of the UoC in a recent evaluation was classified the first Department of Chemistry in Greece on the base of the quality of faculty publications (mean h-Factor of faculty: see in T. Lazaridis, Scientometrics (2010) 82:211–216). This fact was also confirmed, on the basis of its overall performance (teaching, research, infrastructure), by the evaluation of Hellenic Quality Assurance & Accreditation Agency (ADIP):                                 (http://www.hqaa.gr/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=141&Itemid=247&lang=en).
Within the Department of Chemistry I have organized the Division of Environmental and Analytical Chemistry and founded (by decision of the Senate of the University of Crete and the Ministry of Education of Greece) in 1997 the Environmental Chemical Processes Laboratory (ECPL). I have managed to repatriate and hire for the Department of Chemistry and ECPL 3 young prolific scientists (N. Mihalopoulos [Atmospheric Chemistry] in 1993, M. Kanakidou [Environmental Modelling] in 1997 and S. Pergantis [Instrumental Analytical Chemistry] in 2003) to create a multidisciplinary team of Environmental Research. ECPL since its creation is the most productive research unit of the Department of Chemistry and the School of Sciences of the UoC by the number and quality of publications, citation record, and achievement in competitive research funding. According to Essential Science Indicators rankings (http://incites.com/rsg/esi), ECPLʼs average record of citations/faculty (>1200 citations/faculty member) corresponds to the top 1% for the fields of Environmental Sciences and Ecology (individual scientists 340 citations), Geosciences (540 citations) and Chemistry (850 citations).
I have applied and obtained (competitive) funding from the Ministry of Education and the European Commission, to initiate and run the postgraduate programmes “Environmental Sciences and Engineering” with the institutional collaboration of the School of Public Health, Harvard University (1998-2002) and the Department of Chemical Engineering, University of Patras (1998-present) and “Environmental Protection Technologies” with the institutional collaboration of the Higher Technological Educational Institution of Crete (2003-present) that are the most attracting postgraduate programs of the School of Sciences and Engineering of UoC (60-70 candidates for 6 positions in each call). The above-mentioned graduate programmes have been positively evaluated three times by international committees including prominent members of the international scientific community (e.g. Prof. Paul Crutzen, Max Plank Institute, Nobel Prize of Chemistry (now retired); Prof. A. J. Zehnder, President of ETH and EPFL (now retired); Prof. W. Giger, ETH, Editor of ES&T (now retired)).
During my term as Dean of the Faculty of Sciences I managed to expand it to a Faculty of Sciences and Engineering through the establishment of two new Departments (Dept. of Materials Science and Dept. of Applied Mathematics).
Throughout my term, as President of the Technical Council of the University of Crete, the new campus in Voutes was extended with the new buildings of the Chemistry Dept., of the Student Centre and of the Sport Centre. In addition, were built the main frames of the Departments of Computer Science and Mathematics (now completed). The above-mentioned buildings were achieved in 5 years without any increase of their initial budget (for comparison the buildings of Biology and Physics at the same campus were constructed, before my term, in 10 years with a doubling of their initial budget).
I was very honoured (and thus I have accepted the position) that ca. 60% of the Faculty and 70% of the Personnel of the University of Crete selected me to be the Rector (President) of the University of Crete in May 2011 (term started on September 2011 and will be achieved on August 2015). Despite the problems all the Greek HEIs faced, due to the changes to the Universities law in 2011 and the dramatic personnel and budget cuts from 2012 to the present, the University of Crete was distinguished from all other Greek Universities by the harmonious collaboration of the newly established University Council (equivalent to Board of Trustees) and the Rector and its untroubled functioning. In addition, despite all previously-mentioned problems the University of Crete is the best research academic institution in Greece and according to a recent ranking for research accomplishments (http://www.leidenranking.com/ranking.aspx) is the 1st of the 23 Greek Universities and came 48th in the Times Higher Education 2014 rankings of the world’s top 100 universities under 50 years old (improving compared with 2011-2013), and 5th for natural sciences in Europe in 2014 according to the CWTS Leiden Ranking of universities’ scientific performance” (see NATURE 2015, vol. 517, pp. 127-128). Commenting on this, Phil Baty, editor of Times Higher Education Rankings, said: “The Times Higher Education 100 Under 50 is a hotlist of the world's most dynamic and exciting young universities. The list contains many global superstars, including some of the most exceptional and well-funded East Asian institutions; so to make it into the top 100 is a significant achievement in itself. Starting my term as Rector, I have obtained financing from the National Strategic Reference Framework (ESPA) to achieve the installation of all departments remaining in the old buildings (Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Computer Science and Material Science) in the new Heraklion-Voutes campus (by September 2012), and to build the extension of the Research Centre of Social and Human Sciences in the campus of Rethymnon (to be achieved in September 2015). During my Rector’s term, I’ve never stopped my teaching (a semester under graduate course and a semester graduate course) and research activities (see publications list).

II) Research Accomplishments:
My doctoral thesis, with the title “Ringerweiterungreactionen an Aminolactamen” (“Ring enlargement reactions on aminolactames”), was focusing on the development of a transamidation reaction (called zip-reaction) for the synthesis of polyaminolactames, and received particular attention. The publications of my thesis have been cited in classical books of organic chemistry (e.g. “Advanced Organic Chemistry”, by J. March) and opened a field in which, numerous PhD theses were done at the Department of Chemistry of the University of Zurich.
After the defence of my PhD thesis, I received the “Hans Schmid” award for postdoctoral research and continued my scientific career in Environmental Sciences at the EAWAG (German initials for Swiss Federal Institute for Water Resources & Water Pollution Control) of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich). My postdoctoral activity at the EAWAG and later at the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering of Stanford University were important milestones in my research and academic career and indicated my ability to constructively change research field and conduct interdisciplinary research. In both institutions (ETH-Z and Stanford) I studied the fate of organic contaminants in the aquatic environment. The publications, I have authored and co-authored during my postdoctoral research, found recognition in the environmental engineering and scientific community stated by the number of citations received and the following up of this research by numerous studies in leading laboratories worldwide, and had a wide societal impact. My work on the fate of nonylphenol ethoxylate nonionic surfactants (in collaboration with Professor Walter Giger), published in Environ. Sci. Technol., Chemosphere, Organic Mass Spectrometry, and Biomedical and Environmental Mass Spectrometry, triggered the ban of this compound class in Switzerland and Germany. We demonstrated that a hydrophilic and non-toxic surfactant (nonylphenol ethoxylates, added to many commodities) through wastewater treatment was leaving as residue the nonylphenol, a very toxic and lipophilic (prone to bioaccumulation) environmental metabolite. Nonylphenol is now recognized as an endocrine disruptor, a fact that fostered research in leading laboratories in many countries.
In January 1986, I started my academic career as a faculty member in the new Department of Chemistry of the University of Crete (UoC). Trying to promote interdisciplinary research, I collaborated with foreign (ETH Zurich, Max Plank Institute, University of Stockholm, Lancaster University, University P. & M. Curie, Harvard University, Northeastern University, Utrecht University, CNR Bologna, Italy, CREAL and CSIC Spain) and Greek Institutions (Dept. of Chemical Engineering - University of Patras, Dept. of Biology - University of Crete) through European research Programmes and published the results of this effort, with my students and colleagues, in leading journals such as Science, Nature, Environmental Science and Technology, Journal of Geophysical Research, Microbial Ecology, Environmental Health Perspectives, Cell Plant, Lancet, etc.
My scientific group’s research activity focuses in the field of Environmental Organic Chemistry and specifically on the study of biogeochemical cycles of organic biogenic and anthropogenic compounds, the long-range transport of contaminants, the formation of organic aerosols, and recently to the study of the environmental (air and water consumption) exposure of humans to toxic organic chemicals. This activity occurs in close collaboration with Epidemiologists, Modellers and Molecular Geneticists. The tasks of my group consist mainly to assess the environmental exposure (air and drinking water) and to study the metabolites of toxic compounds in human fluids (urine, blood).
The publications produced by my group received attention and recognition by the international scientific community, the specialized scientific press and the international and national press.
Some highlights of my research outcomes at the University of Crete:
We demonstrated, by using a multidisciplinary approach of physical measurements, chemical analysis and meteorological measurements, for the first time that biologically produced gases are converted to particles that may function as cloud condensation nuclei, revealing thus a direct connection between the metabolic activity of trees and the propensity for the atmosphere to produce clouds. The results of this activity were published in leading scientific journals (e.g. Nature, Environmental Science and Technology, Journal of Geophysical Research and Geophysical Research Letters), received numerous citations and were given particular attention in the specialized scientific press (Chemical and Engineering News 76, October 19, 1998) and the international press (New York Times-Sciences Supplement, November 3, 1998). In addition, a part of it has been designated as “Editor choice” (Geophysical Research Letters, Vol. 26, 1999).
In the field of the study of biogeochemical cycles of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), my group was the first to demonstrate by performing field studies, owing to the fine analytical techniques we developed, the destruction of polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs) by hydroxyl radicals, and the mechanism of formation of the very toxic nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs). This research was also published in the leading journals of the field (e.g. Environmental Science and Technology, Global Biogeochemical Cycles, Journal of Geophysical Research).
Our research effort concerning the study of the emerging contaminants, such as polybrominated biphenyl ethers (or PBDEs) used as flame- retardants, published in Environmental Science and Technology was presented in the “Sciences News Site” of the American Chemical Society (http://pubs.acs.org/subscribe/journals/esthag-w/2008/mar/science), in Environ. Health Perspectives (http://www.ehponline.org/members/2008/116-5/focus.html). In addition, an article in “Le Figaro” (http://www.lefigaro.fr/sciences/2008/04/16/) was dedicated to this research.
In another recent study, published in Environmental Health Perspectives, we examined the microbial quality of aerosols over the Eastern Mediterranean region (Island of Crete, Greece) during an African dust storm. Bacterial communities associated with aerosol particles of six different size ranges were characterized following molecular culture-independent methods (analysis of 16S rRNA genes). Spore forming bacteria such as Firmicutes were found to be present at all aerosol particles and dominated the large particle sizes. Besides the dominance of Firmicutes in dust particles, at the respirable particles were detected phylogenetic neighbours to human pathogens. These pathogens have been linked to several diseases such as pneumonia, meningitis, and bacteremia or suspected to induce pathologic reactions such as endocarditis. This study was an important breakthrough (see references in NIH: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2265062/) in the research, focusing on African dust as a microorganism carrier and it is the first report of size-distributed airborne bacteria during a Saharan storm using molecular-based methods.
To advance this study I was awarded, in October 2011, the “ARISTEIA” (EXCELLENCE) grant of the Ministry of Education and Research of Greece (the rejection rate for the ARISTEIA grants was 90%).
Due to the recognition of our publications, my PhD students were received for postdoctoral research in respected research institutions (Harvard University, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Stockholm University, DRI, Northeastern University and others) and are now tenured or on tenure track researchers in foreign and Greek research Institutions. I have also been invited to present the research work of my group by different academic and research institutions. I have served the international scientific community as Editor in international peer reviewed scientific journals, as a reviewer to international and national research agencies, and scientific journals, and as member in international committees.

I am honoured to be, since 2007, member of the European Research Council (ERC) Panel for the Sciences of the Earth.
